When Positivity Meets Resistance: An Interactive Discussion
As someone who naturally leans toward being inspirational and positive, I’ve always taken pride in being the person others can look to for encouragement, solutions, and an optimistic outlook. It’s part of my leadership style and a core value that I bring to every role I step into. I strive to foster an environment where people feel motivated, supported, and empowered to do their best work, because I genuinely believe that positivity can elevate not only the team but the entire workplace culture.
But here’s the reality: no matter how much light you try to spread, there are always going to be certain situations or personalities that seem to push your buttons. Whether it’s the uncoachable employee, the resistant team member, or the constant pressures that leadership brings, it can feel like your positivity is being tested.
These moments of resistance can cause frustration, even for someone like me, who sees leadership as a calling. You start to wonder, “Why do I keep putting so much effort into motivating others when it seems like some just aren’t receptive?” Or worse, “Am I cut out for this role if I’m constantly facing pushback?”
In those moments, I’ve found myself questioning the authority I agreed to take on when I signed that employment letter. I accepted the responsibility to lead, to inspire, and to “deal with” the challenges that come with the territory. I knew going in that it wouldn’t always be smooth sailing, but when those inevitable obstacles arise—personalities clashing, resistance to change, or even a lack of appreciation—it can make me reflect on the magnitude of what I’ve taken on.
But here’s the thing: questioning my authority or ability isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a sign of growth. It’s a reminder that leadership isn’t just about the good days when everything runs smoothly; it’s also about managing those tough days when my patience is tested. It’s about staying true to the promise I made to lead, even when it’s difficult, and recognizing that growth often happens in those uncomfortable moments.
Here’s my question to you:
Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? You signed up for this role, knowing the demands and expectations, but then faced resistance that made you question your own approach?
Let’s explore this together:
What is it that pushes your buttons?
Is it the resistance to change? The uncoachable personalities? The constant demands of leadership? Understanding our triggers is the first step in managing them.
How do you deal with it?
When those frustrations arise, how do you react? Do you internalize it, address it head-on, or find a way to move past it? I often remind myself of why I took on this leadership role in the first place. I signed up to inspire, to lead, and to make a difference—but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy.
What makes you question the authority that you agreed to sign up for?
Do you ever think back to that moment when you agreed to take on this responsibility? Why do we sometimes doubt our decision? Is it because the challenge is greater than expected, or is it a reflection of our own growth as leaders?
Let’s Discuss:
I encourage you to share your thoughts, your frustrations, and how you’ve overcome these moments of doubt. It’s not always easy to stay positive when you’re being tested, but by sharing our experiences, we can support each other in the journey of leadership.
