Healing in Public: Why Sharing Your Story Can Be Scary—But Necessary by Jacqueline Edwards | MedXpressionz Journal
I don’t want people to see me like this.”
Have you ever said that to yourself?
Whether it’s grief, trauma, depression, heartbreak, or the messiness of simply being human—many of us were taught to hide the hard parts. To smile through the pain. To post the highlight reel and bury the brokenness behind a filter.
But what if healing in public is exactly what someone else needs to start their own?
Why It’s Scary
Let’s be real—it’s terrifying to let people into your process. Especially when:
-
You haven’t figured it all out yet
-
You’re still triggered or vulnerable
-
People have judged you before
There’s a fear of being misunderstood. A fear of being labeled. A fear of giving people something to gossip about instead of something to grow from.
But the truth is: healing isn’t always pretty, polished, or private.
Why It’s Necessary
You’re not just healing for you.
You’re healing for the version of you that didn’t know it was possible.
And for the people watching who still believe it’s not.
Your story—told in truth and grace—can become someone else’s survival guide.
You normalize being human.
You disrupt the lie that everyone else has it together.
You remind people that falling apart doesn’t disqualify them from a comeback.
Healing Out Loud Doesn’t Mean Oversharing
Let’s be clear:
Healing out loud doesn’t mean telling everything. It means telling the truth in a way that’s honest, intentional, and safe—for you and others.
It’s okay to say:
-
“I’m not okay, but I’m working on it.”
-
“Here’s what I’ve learned so far.”
-
“This is the part of my journey I’m ready to share today.”
Vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s leadership wrapped in humanity.
My Story Isn’t Over, and Neither Is Yours
I’ve cried behind closed doors and smiled for the camera.
I’ve gone from numb to nervous to open—and back again.
And every time I share a piece of my healing, someone whispers, “I thought I was the only one.”
You’re not alone in your struggle.
And you don’t have to be fully healed to be helpful.
Journal Prompt:
What part of your story are you hiding out of fear—but could set someone free if shared with intention?
Someone is waiting on the other side of your honesty.
Your scars might be the most sacred part of your calling.
Heal at your pace, but don’t be afraid to let someone witness the becoming.
📢 If this resonated with you, share it with someone who’s struggling in silence.
