Confessions of a Serial Overthinker (And How I’m Learning to Chill)

Ever find yourself replaying conversations in your head… over and over?
Or lying awake at 2 AM imagining every possible worst-case scenario and even ones that have a 0.00001% chance of actually happening?

Hi, my name is Jacque, and I’m a recovering overthinker.
(Recovering… because honestly, it’s still a work in progress.)

 The Overthinking Trap

My brain loves to keep busy and even when I’m exhausted.
It replays old wounds, future fears, and all those “what did they really mean by that?” moments.

It’s like having a mind that runs on caffeine, even when my body is begging for peace.
And you know what? Overthinking doesn’t protect us. It doesn’t make us smarter, safer, or more prepared.

It just keeps us stuck.
Second-guessing decisions. Doubting our worth.
Missing out on joy right here, right now.

 Why Do We Do This?

Part of it is just being human.
Our brains are wired to look for threats, solve problems, and make sense of chaos.

But trauma, burnout, and even just living in a hyper-connected, constantly “on” world can crank those circuits into overdrive.
We start preparing for problems that aren’t even ours to solve yet.

How I’m Learning to Chill (or at least, chill more)

Here’s what’s helping me turn down the mental noise:

Noticing the spiral.
When my thoughts start racing, I literally pause and say:
“Whoa, brain. Thanks for trying to keep me safe, but we don’t need to go there.”
Just naming it helps break the loop.

Moving my body.
A walk, some gentle stretching, even cleaning the kitchen — it gets me out of my head and back into my senses.

Doing a brain dump.
I grab a notebook and pour it all out, messy and raw.
Somehow, seeing my thoughts on paper makes them less powerful.

Choosing “good enough.”
Perfectionism is fuel for overthinking.
Sometimes done truly is better than perfect.
(I’m still reminding myself this daily.)

Prayer + breathwork.
Nothing slows me down like whispering, “God, take this.”
And taking five slow, intentional breaths.

 For My Fellow Overthinkers…

If your mind feels like a browser with 67 tabs open and I see you.
You’re not alone, and you’re not broken.
You’re just a deep feeler, a careful thinker, someone who wants to get it right.

But you deserve rest. You deserve to exhale.
And guess what? Most things work out just fine without us overanalyzing them to death.

So here’s to letting go of baggage a little bit more each day.
To trusting that even if we don’t have it all figured out, we’ll be okay.

Because life is meant to be lived, not just thought about. 🌸

Your Turn:
Are you an overthinker too?
