Spiritual CPR: How to Breathe Again After Trauma
Trauma doesn’t always arrive with flashing lights and warning signs. Sometimes it sneaks in quietly—in the form of exhaustion, numbness, anxiety, or the feeling that you’re functioning but not living.
You go to work. You smile for the pictures. You check the boxes. And inside? You’re flatlining.
That’s why we need more than surface-level self-care. We need Spiritual CPR.
Like physical CPR restores breath to a lifeless body, Spiritual CPR helps us reconnect with our soul when life has knocked the wind out of us. It’s not just prayer or journaling. It’s a mindset—a lifestyle of intentional healing.
Here’s how it works:
C – Confess How You Feel. Stop masking. Start telling the truth. Say it out loud: “I’m overwhelmed.” “I’m angry.” “I feel lost.” Confession is an act of courage. It opens the door to authentic healing. God can handle your honesty.
P – Position Yourself to Heal You can’t heal what you won’t prioritize. This means setting boundaries, saying no without guilt, taking breaks, choosing therapy, letting yourself rest. Healing isn’t selfish. It’s sacred.
R – Resuscitate Your Soul with Hope Even if all you can say is, “God, help me.” That’s a start. Play that worship song. Speak that affirmation. Open your Bible to Psalm 23:3 — “He restores my soul.” You don’t need a miracle. You need a breath.
Trauma Lives in the Body
Did you know that trauma doesn’t just affect your thoughts? It affects your nervous system. That’s why you might feel stuck, jumpy, numb, or emotionally exhausted. Your body is in survival mode—even when your mind says you’re fine.
But here’s the good news: the body can learn to feel safe again. Prayer, meditation, breathwork, and grounding techniques aren’t just spiritual tools—they’re biological resets.
Healing is possible. One breath at a time.
Poem: I Forgot to Breathe
I forgot to breathe
Somewhere between showing up and shutting down,
I lost the sound of my soul.
I learned to mask pain in performance,
To smile widely while drowning quietly.
But today,
I remember I am human.
Not a machine. Not a martyr.
A woman healing.
A heart-reviving.
A breath reclaiming its rhythm.
So I inhale grace,
And exhale guilt.
I speak peace into my panic,
And I finally breathe.
